With the advent of iCloud after iOS 5, there's really no substantial need of making backups on physical storage. However these backups are imperative for media content such as music and videos. So to first minimize the size of said backups, it is advised that you sync all other content to iCloud.

1. Connect your device to the computer
2. Open iTunes
3. Once iTunes is launched, open iTunes Preferences
4. Now select previous backups that you wish to delete
