The last coverage for iOS 5 SDK revealed that iOS 5 supported devices will allow over-the-air delta software updates on 3G networks. When Apple published the new OTA updates features of iOS 5 at WWDC 2011, it didn't actually mention the ability to do this on 3G networks, but now it is confirmed.
The public version of iOS 5 for non developer will be available this Fall. iOS 5 is only available in pre-release beta version right now for those enrolled in the Apple Developer Connection. Earlier today, Apple seeded iOS 5 beta 2 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
However, it is still not known what carriers would feel about huge amounts of data being downloaded by millions of iOS devices from their network. Perhaps, what could happen is that small point upgrades like 5.1.1 will be able for download over-the-air via the 3G network, but big updates like 5.1 will require a WiFi connection for over-the-air update.
While it is not yet known which carriers will support iOS 5 delta OTA updates, it looks like by default your iOS device will be required to have around 500MB of free space and enough battery life before the OTA update download and installation procedure begins.
